Did you run the chown as root? Yes, I ran all of it as root, I've seen this before over my NFS<->AFS mounted filesystems, for whatever reason when building code the gid gets set to -2 if the files dont already exist. Im not sure if this is a bug in gcc or in ar|ranlib...
