Yes, that works too.

Using a local repository is normally faster than using a remote one.
It also helps reduce the load on the remote server.

There is also the fact that while there are numerous servers around the
world allowing you to update using cvsup there are only a few allowing
anonymous cvs access.

Having a local copy of the repository also allows you to check the cvs
logs and comparing different versions of files without having to be
online.
