I've been going through the source for binutils-2.9.1 and gcc-2.8.1 comparing the patches for binutils-2.8.1 and gcc-2.7.2.2. So far all the patches I've gone through have been applied. I still can't seem to get the newer toolchain working, though. I have reached the same results you have; I've compiled the toolchain, and I can compile simple test programs.
