The mail you're referring is dated 1999. And FreeBSD began to support RTLD_GLOBAL since December 1999. What version of FreeBSD do you use? And platform, python version? If you're using FreeBSD 3.x, we don't support FreeBSD 3.x in the current ports system no more officially.
