Had a *similar* problem.  I got it to work by:

# uncomment from /usr/local/etc/smb.conf
	encrypt passwords = yes

cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /usr/local/samba/private/smbpasswd 

smbpasswd username
	and re-enter the password here. ugly, but it works.

And I was able to get in.
Your mileage may vary, depending on how new you verion of Samba is.  I'm
running 2.0.3, remade on 7 Apr 99.
