unfortunately I can confirm this as well :( we have 3 freebsd
machines with two adaptec 2940U2W each as news machines, all 
three of them have this problem.

hm well, 3.1R is maybe not that reliable yet, and it's really annoying
if you make a say new kernel, then reboot and then realize after 5-10mins
you have to remote power cycle the thing.

We got some seagate st39102 ultra2lv. We also tried just attaching
only one to one adapter and the problem's still there.
