I have fairly good luck with my Exabyte 8200.  It's slow as hell and
'mt' occaisonally returns the inexplicable error, but I've found it to
be very reliable.  These are drives that were built to last.  What's
more, you can pick one up used of forsale.storage for $250-300.  Tapes
(8mm) are cheap and plentiful.
