The handbook has a very good explanation at: http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/cvsup.html As to whether to do it, if you are a newbie and want to become an "oldie", try updating especially if you aren't too concerned about the box (if it's not a production box)... cvsuping is a good method.
