Not sure whether this is too late by now, but if_vge works as a module when loaded when the system is up, but just doesn't work when loaded from loader.conf. A simple rc.d emtry to load the module will solve this. Or compile it in statically. Now, the performance is awful, about half of what the nvidia chip on the NForce 250 GB does (which in turn was too much trouble elsewhere).
