That's probably a wise choice, as I have been bitten myself by differences between the latest GNU tar and 2.2.6/current tar. E.g. if /usr/local is a symbolic link, tar cfv myarchive.tar /usr/local/ (note the trailing /) FreeBSD tar archives the destination of the link, whereas GNU tar archives just the link...
