The pan newsreader is very good at handling binaries. Can even filter out incomplete binaries and text articles in newsgroups. It's in the ports collection. trn4 is also a very capable binaries handler, and with the included trnkill script and properly configured killfiles, can even automate the process of fetching binaries from your favorite groups.
