Yep, the passwd and master.passwd were both empty, very unusual. I must have made a mistake with mergemaster somehow. > Grab a template from /usr/src/etc/master.passwd, merge your local account, > and you should be good to go. (Default group, etc. files are there too.) I found that and did a pwd_pkdb and now it is working fine. This has been soooo much fun I might just have to wipe out that box and do it again.
