1) make sure you update /etc correctly (use mergemaster from the ports collection). then, 2) make sure your /etc/defaults/rc.conf sources /etc/rc.conf (as distributed) and (the important bit) make sure your /etc/rc.conf (or /etc/rc.conf.local) doesn't then go and source either of these files again! (This often happens if e.g. /etc/defaults/rc.conf gets copied to /etc/rc.conf). This will cause an infinite recursion in the shell processing the rc scripts, which gives rise to the out of file descriptors message. Greg.
