"AMD64" is the architecture, "Opteron" is an instance of that architecture. Perhaps you mean Athlon64 vs. Opteron? I moved my FreeBSD/i386 5-CURRENT compile box from an Athlon XP-2200+ to an Athlon64 3200+ (2.0ghz) machine and cut 14 minutes from the 'make world' time.
