In particular, Linux includes way more headers within other headers than it's supposed to according to standards, so a lot of software which is written for Linux is unportable because it wrongly expects half of the #include work to be done automatically. If you were using the FreeBSD gnut port, you wouldn't have had to do any of this because I already added "#include <sys/types.h>" to the one file in the gnut source code which needs it.
