Sage advice, no doubt. Truth to tell, I've never actually done that -
i.e. a 'make clean' in the /usr/ports directory before attempting to
install a port. Though I am very intimately involved with both the
Makefile.inc as well as the works/ directory sticks in the wheels
of attempting a virgin install.

As to the 'make clean', I'm not so sure. I doubt that would allow me
to install the new gnome 1.4 without further ado. Also, I'm conversing
with someone who did actually manage to install the firebird port on
two distinct machine. I'm trying to find out what the difference is.
I'm betting on me having last done a CVSup on the 15th of februar, but
the jury's still out.

Ok, let's see. Ok, I saw. --- No, I did not. Period.

Here're the saillant details.

On the danger of repeating myself... believe you me, the firebird port
has no *.inc file. Deleting the work directory would make no difference.
Hold that thought...

OK, this is on a very recently CVSup'd 4.3 version. So what's the
next step? Wait till hell freezes over? [Mind, I'm not knocking
FreeBSD or the ports system, I'm knocking the idea that the ports
system works fine without CVS. Subtle difference to be sure, yet
one worth noting].

In fact, I'm parallel to this message carrying on an email discussion
whith one who claim's to've installed this very port (no version
numbers on either the port or the OS were mentioned) on two, count
them - two, machines successfully. To which I replied, naturally, so
what distinfo are you talking about and when's the last CVSup you
performed?

For the record:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 1632524 May 9 19:42 2001.05.09-buildkernel
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 6094492 May 9 06:30 2001.05.09-buildworld
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 13344 May 9 19:45 2001.05.09-installkernel
-rw-r--r-- 1 root wheel 551507 May 9 20:08 2001.05.09-installworld

the other part was live, believe it or not.

Roelof

PS OK, it's my fault. That's usual. I mean, I'm married. Yet, what is the
fault I made exactly this time?
