i upgraded XF86 3.3 versions on freebsd 3.4-3.5 w/o any problems.
and, then from XF86 3,3 to 4, on freebsd 4; then from XF86 v4.0 to 
v4.1. still no problems.

nonetheless, i did recompile all the X software at some time later,
for no apparent reason.

regardless of what portupgrade can or cannot do, if i were you, i
would do it by hand in 4 stages -- fetch/extract, configure, 
install/package -- inside a script(1).
