The problem is resolved. The disk was not a 40 gigger, it was (drumroll) a miss-labeled 60 gig drive. And the BIOS in the system does not handle anything above 40 gig (ok, 38,4) without some kind of disk manager, which was installed on the disk and allowed the MS operating systems to install cleanly.
