OK, sounds like the physical network is fine.

Huh. I thought that BPF was enabled by default in 3.1. Don't try to
use DHCP. If you want to enable it, you need to build a custom
kernel. Find that section in the handbook and follow the
directions. To enable it in the config file, uncomment the line with
'bpf' in it.

More confirmation this is not a physical problem.

Category 5 cable. Four twisted pairs of copper with RJ-45 connectors
on the ends. It is probably what you have.

Not if everything looks to be working.
