Another way to accomplish a similar result -- especially if you're already using amd -- is to make use of the ability (within an amd map) to specify a "type" of "link" (vs. "nfs"). This (type=link) simulates a symlink, as opposed to simulating an NFS mount. I've been using it for >1.5 years here to avoid loopback NFS mounts.
