After switching it back on it booted ok but now X refuses to start. What happens is that it switches into graphics mode (kind of a 50% gray screen with a cross as the mouse pointer) and immediately goes back to text mode. There is some information about the graphics card which looks fine, nor errors of any kind, and then the line 'Waiting for X server to shut down'.^ After that there's the command prompt. (Attached is the output from xinit > xinit.messages 2>&1 for more details) What I've tried: * Startx.err is empty. * Changing the graphics card gave the exact same results. * Different configurations via XF86Setup did not change anything. * there are no lock files of the /tmp/.X*-lock variety The funny thing is that XF86Setup leads me to believe there are no problems: it starts the server itself after all, and that runs. But startx and POOF, back to the prompt. Any ideas why this may be happening or where I should look to get more information? Maybe there is another log file somewhere that would be useful? TIA, Michael XFree86 Version 3.3.3.1 / X Window System (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 6300) Release Date: December 29 1998 If the server is older than 6-12 months, or if your card is newer than the above date, look for a newer version before reporting problems.
