When you say that you have "setup" the drive, what do you mean? Have you configured and compiled a custom kernel? The "identify retries exceeded" error might indicate a hardware problem to me. Double check the jumper settings on the drives on your primary ide connector (ata0), check the cable, and that the cable is plugged in the right direction. Also, once your machine is booted what does the command `dmesg | grep acd` reveal?
