I realize this probably isn't the place to ask this question, but I had no other place to turn.

Is there a way to create a directory with a PERL script?  I have tried using the following format:

system("mkdir $where");

But it isn't picking up the $where variable.

I'm just starting on PERL, so I don't know that much about it.
