System: ASUS P/I P55T2P4D, 1 x P133 CPU, 384MB RAM, 3 x NCR-810, 1 x SMC
EtherPower 10/100. FreeBSD 2.1.5R. Other details available on request.

I recently attempted to replace two 4GB ST-15150N Seagate Barracuda drives
with two 9GB Micropolis 3391 drives on a news box.

The drives are ccd'd together, across SCSI busses.

It mostly-worked. However, after a number of hours of operation, the
system would start reporting I/O errors (even on unrelated disks) and
nothing I did could clear up this situation, short of a reboot.

One odd thing I noticed was the probe message:

Notice that strange probe for sd23 (same happened for sd13).

Removing the 9G drives and replacing the two 4G drives "cured" the problem.
I suspect something is mildly funny with these drives, maybe some SCSI god
would have some insight or suggestions.
