Perhaps if the startup/shutdown info was just written to /var/log/ and people could optionally enable (as in off by default) something in /etc/rc.conf to actually send the info back to a master server on a regular basis. Even if the info isn't sent to the master it could be parsed locally if so desired. Again, just ideas..
