I'm not specifically advising against UW imapd, but I've been using dovecot (ports/mail/dovecot) for several years without any problems. It was absolutely painless to install and configure, and it's humming along perfectly fine. So if you decide to change to a different imapd, I recommend that you have a look at dovecot.
