Nasty.

Dont assume WC Inc CDs that look unscratched are perfect:
On more than one set of WC Inc CDs over the years I've seen errors,
& they weren't scratched AFAIR., though there were sometimes optical
effects more like waves, (as if they'd been washed).
I make an on-line index of all my off line CDs, inc. md5 of every file
on CDs, thus I read aprox the whole surface, so I suppose I see more
  errors than others ( script at http://bim.bsn.com/~jhs/bin/.sh/new_cd ) .
I normally see IO errors on my console though ( xterm -C ) .
BTW WC are very good about replacing bad CDs.

I've got a lot of drives (mostly very old),
Different cd drives can read different media,
it's do with optical sensitivity, differentiating, some writeable
half see through greenish CDs a friend wrote were particularly problematic.
Rewriteables are apparently harder to read than than writables,
which in turn are harder to read (need more differential sensitivity)
than plain old manufacturer supplied cdroms.
