  In sendmail >= 8.9.x there's a "strict" policy regarding messages. Check
the server's log; the error you get is often related to the "check_mail"
ruleset, when sendmail doesn't recognize the sender's domain and logs a
specific error on maillog. Maybe your server has problems doing NS lookups,
if you're sure that the sender's domain you specify is legal.
