The few times I sat in there with a laptop to try and diagnose this, if the `da<n>' message for a disk wasn't printed, then fsck hung (interuptably) trying to check the disk. I could CTRL-C out of fsck, but couldn't find the disk... disklabel also just sat there. Which makes me think its not just messages vanishing.
