I'm not sure about the full ramifications of XFree86-4, so you should ask on -questions about that. But there is no need to keep kde-1.x around if you're using kde-2. However, there are a few programs in ports that still need kde-1 as a dependency. Look in the port Makefile before installing any kde program to make sure that it's for kde-2 and not kde-1.
