How dead? No response to keyboard ctrl-alt-backspace, freezing of existing ssh sessions, no response from front panel power switch. In attempting to fix the problem, I rebuilt the XFree86-4-server (cvsup'd) from the ports. That had no affect. I downloaded XFree86 4.4 off of their website and that also had no affect.
