Check.

That is a strangeness with the atapi device driver, most likely.  When 
2.1-RELEASE was put out, the driver wasn't in the greatest shape.  (It 
probably still isn't.  :)  A change like yours will placate the driver.

That's OK, FreeBSD on my machine is on my second hard disk (wd1).

You need to manually install the boot manager on your first disk.  Look 
in /tools/dist on the CDROM and install OS-BS.
