Yeah I had the same problem but when I compile the custom
kernel with the ed0 ISA interface I don't have the problem
Ifconfig then can find the device ed1.

So compile your kernel with the ISA card in it and you don't have
any problems. Just a little error message in the dmesg that it can't
find the ed0 on ISA that's all
