If it helps, I've noticed the same behavior for quite some time
on my ATI All-In-Wonder Rage128 Pro Theater AGP 32MB card, using
the ati driver.  If I restart my computer and load up KDE,
glxinfo tells me I have DRI enabled.  Then at some point if I
restart X, glxinfo says it's not enabled...  :-(

I don't get stellar 3D performance anyway.. only 500 GLXGearsMarks.  :)
