OK, I know that you are all still trying to figure out who I am and why
I jumped on the bandwagon.
Although I use NT at work (blame them, not me) I love Unix and use it in
school while I am working on my MS at San Diego State University.
I am still a newbie to FreeBSD and have it installed on the better half
of my laptop's hard drive.
Here are my observations:
1. Brett - You seem to be the industry trend man. I have realized
this ever since I have been reading your columns and, recently, your e-mail.
Do you get advance notice of events like this, or is it all hind sight?
YES - we should have been there at the Silicon Valley Linux UG meeting.
YES - we should have been at Tim O'Reilly's summit. But we weren't. I know
San Diego has a ComputoEdge magazine (also in Colorado) that lists all User
Groups and meeting info.
2. Marc Andreesen may not have answered my letter, but Tim O'Reilly
did. OK, so maybe we will never get Gates, Andreesen, McNealy, etc.. to push
FreeBSD, but what about O'Reilly, David Filo (Yahoo!), etc?
3. If we start FreeBSD User Groups, maybe we can get the people in
#2 to come and take advantage of the press.
3. At school (SDSU), the professor that runs the CS networks just
switched most of the department's teaching computers from Solaris to
FreeBSD. Solaris said that they would release the source code to the school
for classes like "Advanced Operating Systems" and "Writing Device Drivers",
but they didn't - so they lost out. If we have CS majors using it in
college - how can we get them to carry FreeBSD out in to the "real world"
after graduation?
