Any suggestions? Ugh. Don't use GNU make, use /usr/bin/make. They have different syntaxes and are basically incompatabile if you start using the advanced features (i.e. what most people do). If you have GNU make installed as `make' in /usr/local/bin, rename it to gmake or you'll just continue to run into troubles.
