I went through the procedure again, and wrote everything down, as per your suspicion it appears to be a translation problem... Install error reported: 'FAILED TO LOAD THE ROOT DISTRIBUTION. My CMOS reports the drive (through autodetect) as: Size: 1271M Cyls:616 Head:64 Precomp:0 LZ:2465 Sector:63 Mode:LBA BSD Kernel boot reports: WD1, 1213, 2485728, 2466, 63s/t, 512 b/s The drive is a SAMSUNG 1.2gig... physical drive parameters (from the manual) are: MODEL: PLS-31274A FORMATED CAPACITY: 1272.7 CYLINDERS: 3842 HEADS: 6 SECTORS/TRACKS: 71-131 INTERFACE: AT Is there a 'set' way to calculate the correct geometry? I've used the pfdisk utility included with the cd, and punched in the reported numbers..to no avail.
