I haven't experienced this (warning: my experience with the sparc
platform isn't much - I only have two U1E's, one which is running
OpenBSD at the monment.).
One question: what version of OBP (the OpenBoot PROM) are you running.
Mine is running OBP 3.35, which was the newest at that time:

Sun Ultra 1 UPA/SBus (UltraSPARC 167MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.35, 192 MB memory installed, Serial #9014402.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:89:8c:82, Host ID: 80898c82.
