I've got nis working enough to read the passwd and group maps, it is the authentication problem that I'm fighting with (I can su from root, but not login). The problem is that Solaris doesn't seem to know how to read the password maps from the FreeBSD server (I think?), and I'm guessing that I need to create a new map (shadow?) on the server, and I was hoping that somebody already went through the effort to make this work (so I wouldn't have to).
