I did this sort of thing once before but it all got blown away in a port
update some time back. :-(

Some comments:  Auto away isn't bad, it's the verbose announcement that
sucks.  It used to be seperately controllable, I presume it still is.

Also, the bold colon when nick completion is on should be taken out and
shot. :-)
