To be general, i need a tool or way of configuring a software package to handle a number of possible configurations of scientific instruments. Here is an illustration: A water system has a central pump, valves, supply and delivery lines. Some of these might need adapters, and there might be custom or specialized components as well. Not to be overlooked are electrical connections. And these can be connected in a near limitless combination. However, useful combinations reduce the figure to a more manageable one. I'm getting long winded. Let's just say lots of components will be connected to each other (physically) and to a control computer (serial, GPIB, TCP/IP) and i need a way to configure and save these properties. Any ideas on where to start? Are there any examples in the BSD tree or on the web somewhere? I'm not sure where to even look.
