Compilers in the base system don't change that often. If the port maintainer takes care to synchronize it with the system compiler, we should be fine. * It might even be impractical to try to build a standalone g77 port. That I don't know. I believe the compiler driver (gcc) can be instructed to call frontends in places other than /usr/libexec though. Maybe it would be feasible if we leave in hooks for that.
