How did you disable the driver?  By building a new kernel, or with
UserConfig?

I'm not sure what you mean by "rebuilding the system".  If you mean
the kernel, and you built a kernel without NE2000 support, you'll have
to build another one with support again.  If you mean the hardware,
you'll obviously have to insert the board you want to use.
