FWIW, I know that during my many attemps to build GNOME from the meta port,
I was forced to cd into some sub-ports po directory and specifically run
the old version of msgfmt against some message catalog, as the -new version
that ran by default was failing.

gettext is not something I've wrapped myself around yet, so I don't know how
trivially easy those problems would be to fix, but I would think that if
they were trivial they would have been fixed already?
