Did you put options NETATALK in your kernel config file and recompile your kernel? If you recompiled your kernel with NETETALK then this sounds like a MacOS error. I have the netatalk asun port installed too, and while my freebsd machine does not show up as a choice in chooser, if you click on the Server IP Address button, and enter the IP, username and password, I get an icon on the desktop. So yes, this is using TCP/IP and then you must have I think MacOS 8.? something or higher, maybe 8.6 or higher. If you have an older MacOS and need to get it to work with appletalk, then I'm sorry I have not been very helpful. But at least you could upgrade to a newer version of MacOS. There at least is a workable option.
