If you haven't already, take a look at "man lnc".  I had a timeout
problem on another  ne2000 clone and the problem ended up being that it
failed to autodetect the network type.  I.e. I was on 10Mbit UTP but it
was trying 100Mbit UTP full duplex.  The network type and duplex
settings can be configured with "ifconfig"  the man page for lnc should
tell you what options are available.  Hope that helps.
