Suggested optional feature for newsyslog.c is to enable timestamp (or 
similar) in the renamed files.

For example:

maillog.0.gz

would become

maillog.0.070701.gz

The format could perhaps be user-specified somewhere in 
newsyslog.conf.   It groks different time formats, so support for that is 
already there.

This would allow someone to accumilate a large archive of logs (sometimes 
necessary) without having to manually rename (and move, before 
rotation).   This could negate the current rotation of the log files... or 
it could be altered as well to be optional in the newsyslog.conf file.
