Have you considered getting a different EIDE controller?  When I
bought my machine in January, they were $22, now they're about $11
or $12 for VL-BUS EIDE, floppy, 2 serial, 1 parallel, 1 game; add
$40 if you want 16550 serial ports.  This might be a quick, cheap
fix.
