If the way exmh used it to do fast searches on it's one-message-per-file
folder system is any guide, it's between 5 and 10% of the original size.

If you want to see something that I like (so far), have a look at:
http://www.cineca.it/proxy/search/

It uses something called "swish" to do the searching from what I can see in
the html source, and hypermail to manage it.

This may be fine for www access, but I don't know if it's useful at all in
text mode.
