I imagine quite a few people still use the 2.2 branch Changing to a different version of NTP in the 2.2 branch would violate a lot of freebsd development guidelines. What you want to do is upgrade to 3.2-Stable then run the verion of [x]ntpd that suits your fancy. They should all compile right out of the box.
